More expensive gasoline at the pump? “The difference in price is not due to a difference in taxation…”

The price of gasoline has reached a historic record in Belgium, with a maximum price at the pump of 2.402 euros per liter of super 98 E5. A price never seen, therefore, but which could still climb.

The end of confinements in China, which should thus see its economy revive, and the approach of summer transhumance risk driving prices even higher. Even if, in the other direction, the announcement by Saudi Arabia of an increase in its production could stabilize prices, if not bring them down.

We take stock of the situation, also recalling what we are talking about exactly.

1
Maximum price and price at the pump: what is the difference? The maximum price communicated each day is the one that the attendants cannot exceed. This is usually the price you find along the highways or in places where there is no competition. Except in these places, the prices practiced are lower. Example: while the super 98 E5 costs 2.402 euros, it can be found at 2.28 euros in Braine-l’Alleud, in Walloon Brabant. But the differences can be greater for other fuels: the super 98 is far from being the most sold.

Why is the super 98 more expensive? Because it is a fuel that is more refined than super 95 (or Euro 95 E10), to achieve a higher octane rating.

So we find 98% octane in 98 gasoline and 95% in 95 gasoline. The rest is heptane. The price difference is not due to a difference in taxation but to a higher production cost for the 98.
