RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — More Brazilians said they were mixed race than said they were white last year, the country’s statistics agency said Friday, citing data from its most recent census.

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reported in a statement that regarding 92.1 million people—approximately 45.3% of the country’s population—are considered mestizo. Another 88.2 million Brazilians, 43.5% of the inhabitants, said they were white.

In 2010, when the previous census was carried out in Brazil, 47.7% of the population declared themselves white, while 43.1% identified themselves as mixed race.

The IBGE said it was the first time since 1991 that these demographic data have occurred in the South American nation, where millions of black and indigenous people have endured racism since their ancestors were enslaved.

The statistical agency says that the country’s demographic profile is made up of the following groups: white, black, brown, yellow and indigenous. Moreno refers to mestizo and yellow to people of Asian descent.

The IBGE carried out its first census in 1872, when Brazilians were still enslaved by European landowners and their descendants.

In the statement, the agency added that another 20.6 million Brazilians, or 10.2%, said they are black, while 1.7 million, or 0.8%, identify as indigenous, and more than 850,000, the 0.4%, are considered yellow.

The black population in Brazil increased from 7.6% in 2010, an increase of more than 42%.

“Between 2010 and 2022, black, indigenous and mestizo populations increased their percentage in each age group, while white and yellow populations decreased in number,” the agency noted.

The IBGE also said that mestizo populations are the majority in 58.3% of Brazil’s cities, and most of those inhabitants live in the impoverished northeast region of the country. Whites are the majority in 41% of the South American nation’s cities, divided between the southeastern and southern regions, both more prosperous.
