People from Zeeland, Groningen and Drenthe are increasingly starting their own businesses. In the Randstad, the number of starting entrepreneurs is barely increasing. This is according to figures from the Chamber of Commerce.
Between the beginning of April and the end of June, 1,824 entrepreneurs were added in Groningen, 18 percent more than in the same period last year. Substantial increases were also seen in Zeeland, Drenthe and Limburg, of 14, 12 and 10 percent respectively.
The popular sectors among starters differ per province. For example, there are many new entrepreneurs in the catering industry in Groningen, while in Zeeland many have started a wholesale business or opened a retail business.
Although the number of starters is a lot higher in the Randstad conurbation, it is hardly rising, if at all. For example, 6,323 people in North Holland started a business in the second quarter. That was the same number as a year earlier. In South Holland there was an increase of 2 percent, while in Utrecht there was a decrease of 1 percent.
All in all, the number of companies in the Netherlands is still increasing. There are currently almost 2.5 million companies in our country, including the self-employed. The number of companies in our country has been on the rise for years.
“The fact that the number of companies continues to grow is part of a long trend,” says Joris Knoben, professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship. However, he thinks it is striking that there are many new starters just outside the Randstad conurbation. “This counteracts the dichotomy between urban and rural areas.”
The number of stoppers actually decreases
While the number of start-ups is increasing, the number of closing companies is decreasing. Just under 30,000 entrepreneurs decided to stop their business in the second quarter, which is less than in the same period last year.
It was expected that more companies would stop in recent months, because entrepreneurs no longer receive corona support and now have to pay their tax debts. But so far this has not led to more business closures.
This is not regarding bankruptcies, but regarding companies that stop of their own accord; think of a self-employed person who decides to return to paid employment. There are also companies that threaten to go bankrupt and then just throw in the towel on their own.
