The number of photographers in the Netherlands has grown considerably over the past five years. The number of women in photography in particular increased.
In 2018, more than 31,000 photographers were registered with the Chamber of Commerce (KVK). At the beginning of 2023, there are already more than 42,000, an increase of 34 percent. Nearly 60 percent of photographers make ends meet with photography as their main source of income.
The number of women in photography also rose sharply. More than half of the photographers in the Netherlands are women. In 2018, that was still 46 percent.
“Not only photography, other visual forms such as graphic design and illustration are also growing strongly,” says Suzanne Henning, director of DuPho, the professional organization for photographers in the Netherlands.
The main reason behind the growth of photography, according to Henning, is that the digital world has grown. “With images, information can be passed on faster.”
No protected profession
The fact that the profession is becoming increasingly popular is positive, says Henning. But it can also bring challenges. It is easy to start in photography, because it is not a protected profession. Anyone with a camera can quickly call themselves a photographer.
That sometimes makes it more difficult for well-trained and professional photographers. They have incurred more costs by, for example, doing a course, which means that they want to charge more for an assignment. Photographers who have not done any training can charge a lower rate for the same work.
Almost half of the photographers live in North or South Holland. 19,636 photographers are located in these provinces. The fewest photographers live in Zeeland; there are only 678.
