Work in the healthcare sector is increasingly being done by self-employed people. Many, especially among midwives, general practitioners and physiotherapists, work as entrepreneurs. Last year, 178,000 people in healthcare were their own bosses. In 2021 there were still 156,000.
That is an increase of 14 percent in one year, according to figures from statistics agency CBS. That is a much larger increase than in other sectors. On average, the number of self-employed increased by 7 percent.
One in nine workers in the healthcare and welfare sector is their own boss. Three quarters of the 178,000 self-employed people in healthcare do not employ any staff and therefore work as self-employed.
Many self-employed entrepreneurs work especially at dental practices, midwifery practices and physiotherapy. About 68,000 self-employed people work in that area. There are also relatively many self-employed people active in general practices and social work.
Better balance between private and work or more money
Many self-employed people say that they have chosen this way of working because “they want to decide for themselves how much and when they work,” CBS said following research. Self-employed women think they can better combine work and private life this way. Men see opportunities to earn more money.
Not everyone works as an entrepreneur of their own volition. One in ten self-employed people would prefer to work somewhere as an employee.
Discussion regarding bogus self-employment and distribution of services
The large number of self-employed people in healthcare is often a point of discussion. Especially when it comes to self-employed people who do the same work as permanent staff at large healthcare organizations. So-called bogus self-employment in healthcare (a permanent job packaged in a hiring structure) has not been addressed much in recent years.
Hiring self-employed people often costs healthcare organizations more money than hiring a permanent employee. But due to staff shortages, healthcare organizations sometimes have to rely on self-employed people.
Furthermore, schedules are sometimes a problem. This makes it easier for self-employed people to refuse night and weekend shifts or overtime. This puts permanent employees in a pinch and their workload increases. Recently concluded employment contracts in some healthcare sectors now stipulate that permanent staff have first choice for services.
