The old-age and survivors’ insurance (AVS) also pays allowances to Swiss pensioners who are parents of minor children or children in training (up to their 25e anniversary). Last year, more than 23,000 people received such a supplementary pension. This cost the AVS more than 230 million francs, which is three times more than twenty years ago, reports the “Daily Gazette”.

The German-speaking newspaper explains that this sharp increase can be understood by the growing number of retirees – mainly men – who have children at retirement age. Statistics show that one in 50 fathers is over 50 when their child is born; once morest one in 2400 mothers.

It would seem that the costs of these children’s pensions are increasing especially abroad. The “Tages-Anzeiger” reveals that the AVS spent 4.4 million francs for such pensions paid in Thailand, a country which seems popular with Swiss pensioners. There, one in eight retired men receives a child’s pension. Twenty years ago, this amount was 257,000 francs. In the Dominican Republic and the Philippines, one Swiss pensioner in five and one in seven receives a child’s pension. In Brazil, this proportion is one in ten.
