More Ads: Windows 11 Shows New Microsoft 365 Ad in Dev Channel Update

Microsoft is testing a new way to advertise its own services in Windows 11. After introducing recommended actions in the Start menu, the big tech started showing an advertisement for Microsoft 365 — its suite of productivity applications that includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, and others — on the System Settings page.

As discovered by enthusiast Albacore from Twitter, ads started running with the release of Build 23451 on the Dev channel. Users who don’t have a Microsoft 365 subscription may see an ad on the settings app home screen offering a free trial period. Check out:

The ad will be in a new section called “Home”, which will also serve as a control center for the user to find security tips for their account and view the status of cloud storage available on OneDrive.

A small change discovered in the same test build will allow users to see which of their products are currently out of support in the “Accounts” section. In the example below, the system alerts to the end of support for Office 2013.

As we reported last week, Build 23451 brings several new features for testers subscribed to the Dev channel. In addition to a new widget for the Facebook app, the build features a new widget panel with a three-column layout on large screens and minor changes to the Windows Spotlight interface.

Parallel to this, rumors indicate that Microsoft will resume its strategy of launching a new generation of the operating system every three years. With that, several enthusiasts and leakers believe that Windows 12 will be presented in 2024. It is speculated that the future version of the platform will be marked by a variety of artificial intelligence resources.
