Morbius selon Jared Leto
Each actor has their own method of getting into the shoes of a fictional character and bringing them to life on the big screen. Some are inspired by the source material, especially when it comes to an adaptation, others on the contrary move away from it as much as possible. For multi-faceted artist Jared Leto, comics are the source of his vision for Doctor Michael Morbius, even if the latter had to turn an authentic villain into an anti-hero.
How did you approach the character of Morbius for this film?
I was inspired by the original content. He’s a character that’s been mentioned a lot in comics since the 1970s. There was a lot to see, a lot to discover. I really created the basics of my character thanks to the comics. – Jared Leto (actor – Morbius)
How do you turn a villain like Morbius into a hero? What was the creative process?
This film is not so binary. He’s not exactly a hero, but he’s not exactly a villain either. He’s a complex character. There’s a lot of nuance, and that’s really something I found fascinating regarding Morbius. Is he a superhero? Is he a super villain? There are many questions to ask. – Jared Leto (actor – Morbius)
The vampire: a historical figure of cinema
The figure of the vampire in cinema is not new. The nocturnal creature has haunted the 7th Art since the era of black and white cinema. Jared Leto is full of praise for this once silent art and more particularly for a 1931 film directed by Tod Browning starring Bela Lugosi in the title role. Another cult feature film by Francis Ford Coppola was also mentioned during our brief exchanges. Before even approaching his filmography, the actor returned to his personal relationship to Art and especially to visuals.
Beyond the comics, what were your main sources of inspiration?
The works of art, which I like a lot, also inspired me through the look and feel of the designs. I’m a very visual person and this really sparked my imagination. – Jared Leto (actor – Morbius)
Who do you think are the most outstanding vampires in cinema?
I really liked the first Dracula movie I saw. It was in black and white, it was really beautiful. I was very young when I saw it, but it really inspired me. Gary Oldman’s Dracula was very good too. – Jared Leto (actor – Morbius)
Morbius is released in cinemas in France on March 30, 2022.
