Monumental Felines: Celebrating 50 Years of the E17 and its Impact on Flanders

Licking their paws on the roof of Widem Logistics at the exit of Mouscron, in the middle of a walk near Kortrijk Xpo or looking down from the top of its six meters at motorists from the roof of Wever & Ducré Lighting a little further: those who frequent the E17 motorway from Rekkem to Kortrijk have noticed the appearance of monumental felines for a week. They are materialized in corten slats, works of which we recognize the signature of the Atelier IZR (Roeselare).

The approach was initiated by the Courtraisian intermunicipal company Leiedal, which is still looking for roofs to install six in all. She does not only want to put art on the highway that crosses the territory.

The objective is much more symbolic: to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this motorway and what it has enabled, as Wout Maddens, president of the neighboring intermunicipal company, explained to our colleague from Het Nieuwsblad: “The E17 has served as a lever for entrepreneurship in the southwest of Flanders and has led to enormous activity in the region. The cat symbolizes the resilience of our businesses”.

Two exhibitions already planned

This half-century will be celebrated for a year. It started with these big cats and will also be celebrated through an exhibition entitled “Le route de l’autoroute” open to all, from August 26, at “The Square” campus at the Hogeschool West-Vlaanderen and “Haut Kortrijk and artistic interventions along the E17” at the Jan Persijnstraat.
