Excellent since his arrival in Phoenix, Monty Williams has been rewarded by his management. The Suns coach has signed a long-term contract extension in Arizona.
May 3, 2019, Phoenix announces the arrival of Monty Williams as the new coach of the Suns. The 47-year-old coach, mainly known for his experience in New Orleans, finds himself facing a major challenge. The franchise is vegetating in the slums of the West and has just seen three coaches pass in… three years. It therefore takes a providential man to put the Cactus back on the NBA map. This tactician is Monty Williams and he will only need a year to prove that he is the man for the job. After a decent first season marked by the mad series of the Orlando bubble (8 wins in a row), Phoenix takes the balls to the top following the arrival of Chris Paul in the 2020 offseason. The young local guard (Booker, Ayton, Bridges, Cam Johnson) guided by the Point God panics the counters and downright offers an NBA Final (lost) in 2021. We take the same ones and we leave for a round the following season with a new masterclass in regular, punctuated of two franchise records. One on the record (64-18) and the other on the longest winning streak (18 consecutive wins) in Arizona history. Enough to logically offer Monty Williams a title of Coach Of the Year in 2022. Of course, the disillusionment of the Playoffs tarnished this great season, but the management did not forget all the work accomplished and wanted to continue to work with his coach. That’s why Adrian Wojnarowski fromESPN informs us this afternoon that the tactician has signed a “long-term” extension with the franchise.

While he had two years left on his previous contract, Monty Williams will therefore offer himself a good share of rab since we imagine that his new deal will logically bind him to the club until 2026 or 2027 at least. This is a great proof of confidence on the part of the management. After the failure of the last Playoffs, we could have expected to see the front office take its time before giving such a deal, but James Jones has full confidence in his coach. It must be said that the latter has not done things by halves since his arrival. Three seasons at the head of the club, including two in the Top 2 in the West, an NBA final, two franchise records, not to mention that with a record of 149 wins for 78 losses, he has the third best ratio in the history of Suns coaches! At some point, you also have to recognize merit.
Monty Williams extended by the Suns is a logical reward for someone who has done a great job since his arrival. Only the ring is missing for the story to have its happy ending.
