Montreal Canadiens’ Draft Choices: The Key to Future Success

2024-01-15 13:50:28

As you know, at the last draft, the Canadian had a choice in his hands that might change everything. For what?

Because following the top 4 (Connor Bedard, Leo Carlsson, Adam Fantilli and Will Smith), there was a break in talent… or at the level of attitude, in the case of Matvei Michkov.

Because the Canadian failed to get one of the top-4 talents, he had several options to choose from followingward. Many quality guys were available for the CH…

But the club might also exchange its choice.

We know that Yaroslav Askarov was offered to the CH so that the Predators draft David Reinbacher fifth overall. We know that the Flyers offered Cutter Gauthier to CH, who also wanted to draft Reinbacher. The CH, however, considered Gauthier as a fifth choice of a weak vintage.

We also know that Kent Hughes received numerous calls and we can believe that several clubs intended to draft Reinbacher.

Note also that the Coyotes, who drafted a defenseman sixth overall, probably had the firm intention of drafting Reinbacher if the latter were to slip to them.

Brief. All this to say that the Canadian drafted a player in demand last June. This is a decision that is important for the future with the Montreal Canadiens.

For what? Because if he becomes what he needs to become, the club will be in the car.

I was always one of those who didn’t see the problem in drafting the best right-handed defender of his vintage… especially with such potential and such a stocked toolbox. After all, a defender of the genre is expensive. Ask the Flyers what they think. #CutterGauthier #JamieDrysdale

And according to what Marc-Antoine Godin and Arpon Basu, who is in Europe to chat a little regarding the Canadian’s hopes, report on their podcast (The Basu and Godin Notebook), the Canadian has Reinbacher in high esteem.

At what point? To the point where the name of Noah Dobson, the excellent Islanders defender, is a comparison circulating among the Canadian when talking regarding Reinbacher.

If he played in Montreal this season, Noah Dobson would be the club’s leading scorer – by far, considering forward Nick Suzuki’s 35 points. He currently has 43 points in 42 games and should have votes for the Norris by the end of the season.

The 6’4 right-handed defenseman scored 51 and 49 points in his last two seasons. But this year? He’s on another planet. He exploded five years following being drafted, which is not unusual for a defenseman.

The guys on the podcast are right to mention that if an NHL club wants to get their hands on a Dobson right now, it will be impossible to do so. The 2018 first-round pick cannot be traded at this time.

If a club wants a defender of this type without paying a fortune on the free agency market (assuming that one day, such a defender will be free as the air), it must logically draft him. And that’s what the Canadian did.

Note that Reinbacher is not necessarily having the season he hoped for, but that the Canadian’s hope is learning better and better to manage the pressure of being a first choice in a market like Montreal. That’s not nothing.

He is developing in a men’s league and he is gaining confidence.

I can’t wait to see him finish the season in Laval (because yes, I assume it will happen) and I can’t wait to see if, like Dobson, he will play in the NHL at the age of 19 only.

A lot of

– Interesting.

– Certainly.

– Will Marcus Stroman be able to stand out in New York?

– Bill Belichick in Dallas? The Cowboys’ loss to the Packers yesterday hurt. [JdeM]

– Still in the NFL, the Lions won once morest the Rams.
