Montreal Blackout: Thousands of Households Left Without Power in Intense Heat

2023-07-06 22:49:17

More than 200,000 Montreal households were deprived of electricity (and therefore of fans and air conditioning) Thursday followingnoon, while the metropolis was going through an episode of intense heat. About a fifth of Montreal households therefore found themselves temporarily without power.

They were only regarding 135,000 around 4:30 p.m., then barely 1,250 at the start of the evening.

The boroughs of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and Saint-Laurent, as well as the cities of Côte Saint-Luc, Hampstead, Kirkland, Beaconsfield and Pointe-Claire, were particularly affected.

At the Montreal airport, flights bound for the United States were grounded due to the outage. “Please contact your airline to confirm flight schedules,” the airport said on its Twitter account.

Hydro-Quebec places the blame on “the triggering of a protection mechanism on one of our high voltage transmission lines”. “The analysis continues to [en] know the exact cause,” says the state corporation.
