Montpellier metropolis: getting to work by car and for free is possible

The Klaxit carpooling application is now open to all audiences.

The driver earns money – up to €160 per month – and the passenger spends nothing. No error in this sentence.

This situation is made possible through the carpooling application Klaxit. The latter specializes in home-to-work journeys and is present in 31 cities across the country.

Experimented since the beginning of 2021 on the scale of the Metropolis, this service was, firstly, deployed with companies of at least 300 employees then, then of 100 employees.

Since January 2022, this system has now been extended to the entire population.

Changing travel habits

“Today, 90,000 car trips take place in the morning. It’s regarding the same number in the evening. The goal is to reduce this figure by 3 to 5%”said Julie Frêche, Vice-President of the Metropolis in charge of transport, this Friday, March 18 at the premises of the CAF in Hérault on the occasion of the presentation of Klaxit.

Thanks to the Mobility Orientation Law passed in November 2019, local authorities are authorized to subsidize carpooling journeys.

A boon for the Métropole de Montpellier, which has made alternative mobility one of its priorities. “At the December 2021 Metropolitan Council, we released an envelope of €500,000”announced Michaël Delafosse, also present this Friday, March 18.

It is therefore this money that enables the driver to receive between €2 and €4 per journey.

To date, more than 7,000 people are registered in the Métropole “and more than 10,000 trips per month are made via Klaxit”, detailed Julie Frêche. Aware that this is only “a drop of water as the habits of traveling solo to go to work are anchored”as explained by Julien Honnart, the founder of Klaxit.

All the actors of this project are confident regarding the deployment of this new mobility as the first figures are encouraging.

How it works ?

Klaxit is a mobile application. It is the driver who posts an ad. For this, he must indicate his place of departure and his place of destination.

Ensuite, “to avoid big detours, he indicates the points where he can drop people off and pick them up”, added Julien Honnard. There is nothing more to do.

Thanks to the first user loop created with the first test phase, the municipality ensures that the passenger will have “75% chance of finding a route that suits him”.

In addition, in the event of cancellation, insurance exists to allow the passenger to make his journey free of charge with a taxi.
