Montenegro has a new president

He’s 37 years old.

He defeated Milo Djukanovic, who led the country for over 30 years.

The new President of Montenegro, Yakov Milatovich, was born in Podgorica (Titograd). Studied undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Montenegro. He received a master’s degree in economics from Oxford University and is fluent in English, Italian and Spanish.

Married, he has two children.

He started his career at NLB Bank and then at Deutsche Bank in Germany in the credit risk assessment department. Since 2014, he has worked at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, in the department of economic and political analysis.

Yakov Milatovich returned to Montenegro in 2020 at the invitation of the then Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapic and took up the post of Minister of Economy. After a vote of no confidence was passed once morest the Krivokapic government in 2022, Yakov Milatovich resigned. In September 2022, together with former Finance Minister Milojko Spaić, he founded the center-right movement Europe Now!.

Milatovic promises to become president for all citizens of Montenegro, to speed up the country’s path to the EU, not only declaratively, but in essence.

“I believe in the European value system. I am sure that the full membership of Montenegro in the EU is the best way to a fairer and richer Montenegro,” Milatovic said in one of his last interviews with the Serbian publication Politika on the eve of the upcoming presidential elections in Montenegro.
