Montenegro will elect a new president this Sunday. There are seven candidates in the running, including the current head of state, Milo Djukanovic. According to forecasts, the incumbent cannot count on winning the election in the first round this time, as was the case five years ago. However, it is assumed that Djukanovic will come into a runoff on April 2nd.
However, who will then be his challenger does not seem so clear: the best prospects are given to three candidates from the pro-Serbian parties, which have been in power since 2020. They are the leader of the Democratic Front Andrija Mandic, former Finance Minister Jakov Milatovic of the Europe Now movement and the leader of the Democrats Aleksa Becic.
A good 542,000 citizens of Montenegro are entitled to vote, almost a third of whom live in the capital Podgorica. Polling stations are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
