I really love this sentence from Marc Antoine Godin.
Everyone seems to be waiting for Cole Caufield’s next contract, but meanwhile, we forget that a new deal for Samuel Montembeault might very well end up on Kent Hughes’ desk this summer. . –Marc Antoine Godin
In fact, it’s true that at the moment, we don’t talk regarding it much. Montembeault will play next season the last year of a two-year contract he signed last summer, in July 2022.
Let’s remember that the agreement brings him a million dollars annually, which is a godsend for the Canadian at the moment. After all, Monty played no less than 40 games in 2022-2023.
You will therefore understand that this is a big year to come for the Quebecer. He’s telling everyone that he deserves the chance to assert himself as the number one goaltender in the NHL and it’s his salary that will benefit.
Because we agree on an obvious point: Montembeault’s next contract will be much more lucrative.
At the moment, his value is only increasing through his recent performances with CH and at the World Championship and this is why the Canadian might decide to offer him a contract extension this summer. because its value is skyrocketing.
If the CH waits and this year, the Quebecer still offers an excellent performance to the CH and Kent Hughes, it will cost even more. It’s not rocket science.
I told you regarding Marc Antoine Godin at the beginning of the article and that’s where he comes into the picture. The Athletic reporter wrote a paper in which he compares Montembeault to three other NHL goalies who have statistical similarities and it’s interesting.
En gros, on parle ici de Joonas Korpisalo, Philipp Grubauer and Vitek Vanecek.
I’ll put the link to his article before continuing.

In the text in question, Marc Antoine Godin has inserted a great table to report the statistics of the main players.
When we look at the figures, we understand that these are three excellent comparisons for the next contract of Montembeault.
Oui, Monty has slightly worse statistics than Korpisalo, Grubauer and Vanecek… But, there is not a gap enormous between the figures of the four guardians:
You know that in the NHL, numbers and comparables are important when it comes time for players to sign a new contract. It’s normal: guys want to be paid their fair value and they don’t want to leave money on the table.
In the perspective that the CH should not offer a long-term contract (four years and more) to Montembeault because he has not yet necessarily proven that he deserves one, we must expect that the Canadiens are offering him a two or three-year “bridge” contract, just like the goalies we see in the picture above.
This is why comparables are interesting, even beyond statistics. The difference, however, is that Montembeault had to go through waivers twice before getting to where he is today.
It’s all in all an intriguing discussion and it’s going to come up once more in the coming months.
However, once the Caufield contract is signed… Perhaps Kent Hughes will want to make sure to settle the file of Monty, who might become the goalkeeper of the future in Montreal.

I am looking forward to the CAR fwds vs. Florida’s defence, which lacks a guy with the ideal size/mobilty combo. Canes come hard and fast on the forecheck. Can that defence group withstand another round without cracking?
