While the title of MVP was announced yesterday, another award – admittedly much less expected – had yet to find a taker, namely that of NBA Leader of the Year. The League has just announced the big winner: Monte McNair, general manager of the Sacramento Kings.
Remember when part of the NBA planet laughed at Monte McNair and the Kings when they decided to trade Tyrese Haliburton to pick up Domantas Sabonis in February 2022? Well today, McNair is laughing.
The general manager of the Sacramento franchise has indeed just win the NBA Manager of the Year award according to the latest press release from the League. Monte McNair thus joins Mike Brown (Coach of the Year) and De’Aaron Fox (Clutch Player of the Year) in the list of members of the Kings honored at the end of the season.

A reward that is the direct result of the great campaign of the Kings. After years of mediocrity, the Sacramento team found plenty of color in 2022-23, with the Californians finishing on the Western Conference podium with 48 wins to break this cursed series of 16 seasons without Playoffs. The Kings even went so far as to push the defending champion – the Golden State Warriors – to a Game 7 in the first round.
In addition to Domantas Sabonis, Monte McNair also recruited during the summer Kevin Huerter et Malik Monkwhile selecting Keegan Murray with the fourth pick of the 2022 Draft. It was also McNair who chose to bet on Mike Brown to be Sacramento’s new coach, a paying choice given the tremendous work the Kings coach has done this season. Result: a real team was born, and all of Sactown vibrated.
Well deserved recognition for Monte McNair and credit should go to Wes Wilcox and the rest of the front office as well.
Traded for Domantas Sabonis, Kevin Huerter, Trey Lyles.
Drafted Keegan Murray and Davion Mitchell.
Signed Malik Monk. https://t.co/AlBj1zMr4W

The future will tell if this Sacramento campaign is a one-shot or the start of a great period in the Californian capital, but it’s hard not to salute the work carried out by Monte McNair (extended for three years last January) for allow the Kings to once once more be a competitive team in the NBA.
