Monne Bookstore: A New Literary Haven in Saint-Amant-Tallende

In Saint-Amant-Tallende, near Clermont-Ferrand, residents welcome a new business. Opened at the beginning of December, the Monne bookstore is a project led by Anne-Laure and Johann Guillaut-Bachet, a couple from a small village in Isère. A store that has already found its place among its inhabitants.

For 10 days, Anne-Laure Guillaut-Bachet has been giving advice : “I have some very beautiful albums. I’m thinking of Kyman. I’ll show you what I have. I have this one, Le souffle du vent, which I find magnificent.” A philosophy teacher for 15 years, she left the classroom to open her bookstore in Saint-Amant-Tallende (Puy-de-Dôme), which is always full. “We are well aware that there is the euphoria of the opening and the Christmas holidays. But for us, it mightn’t be more exciting. We are really happy to see the recognition of the residents and to feel that our project responds to a real need.”

A real need, because the town of Saint-Amant-Tallende and its 1,700 inhabitants did not have this type of store. The Monne bookstore quickly aroused enthusiasm, with a significant advantage, according to Isabelle, a resident : “It’s proximity. It’s good for keeping the town and the surrounding villages alive.”

Éliane, another resident, adds : “We will no longer need to travel to pick up books. We will be able to buy our book while doing our shopping, it’s magical. And then it will mean we no longer order from Amazon, I imagine.”

Originally from Vercors, the couple embarked on this project following leaving for Casablanca 3 years ago. A first visit to the premises in February, then everything fell into place for their new life. As a novelist, Johann is in his element. He tells : “I feel like we found a great compromise. On a professional level, it’s great, at least for the moment, to open the bookstore. We learned a lot of things. We still have lots of things to develop.” In the projects, there are desires for writing or philosophy workshops. But the first of these will be the development of a tea room, planned for early 2024.
