Infectologist Julio Castro stated that monkeypox is not related to covid-19, since it is a zoonosis. This means that they are diseases that are naturally found in the jungle environment and eventually an accidental intermediate host is the human being.
“It is not the type of disease that I think is going to have the same outcome as covid-19. This does not seem to be the case due to the transmission mechanism that we know of this disease,” said the specialist.
He indicated that monkeypox is a disease that began in the seventies, that what is striking regarding that moment is that it appeared without apparent explanation in different parts of the world and develops in people who have not traveled to the area where the virus is endemic.
Monkeypox common in East Africa
The expert explained that the disease is transmitted in East African countries such as Nigeria, Sierra Leone and the Congo, due to the interaction of humans with rodents and apes that produce monkeypox sporadically.
Right now there is an alert in the world for infections in people who did not travel to any of the countries mentioned. Therefore, it means that there is transmission from person to person, Castro said in an interview with Unión Radio.
“Probably someone who came out of Africa and there is some link between all of this that is being studied, it may be the explanation for this because it is known that it is transmitted by direct contact, “he indicated. “The fluid that the blisters have is infectious, but there can also be transmission through very close respiratory secretion.”
High of covid infections
Regarding the covid-19 pandemic, the specialist reiterated that there is no relationship between it and the smallpox virus. However, he reported that a new wave of the pandemic may begin in the American continent due to the increase in infections.
“It is possible that we are at the beginning of a new pandemic wave,” he warned.
He insisted on continuing with biosecurity measures, which until now are the only protection tools once morest covid, including the mask, which also serves as protection once morest the monkey virus.
