According to statistics from Toronto Public Health, from the beginning of 2024 to the end of July, after major festivals and events, there were 93 confirmed cases of monkeypox. This compares to 21 cases during the same period last year.

Public Health noted that while cases have been reported across the city, there is a higher concentration in the city center.

She said travel history was not a significant risk factor among the currently confirmed cases, suggesting the infected person acquired the infection locally.

Currently, monkeypox is mainly contracted by people who have close or sexual contact with an infected person. Gay, bisexual men and those who have sex with other men are most affected.

The vaccine can also be used as post-exposure prophylaxis in people who have been in contact with an infected person.
