Monkey pox: seventeen cases confirmed in Belgium, according to Sciensano

There are currently 17 confirmed cases of monkeypox in Belgium, says Friday l’Institut de santé publique Sciensano. There are 11 in Flanders, five in Brussels and one in Wallonia.

For now, the only cases detected in our country are young men who have sex with other men. They are between 28 and 46 years old. The very first cases date back to an international fetish festival, Darklands, which took place in Antwerp earlier this month. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes that this virus does not discriminate and is not limited to the gay community.

The virus spreads through close contact between people, but so far no carriers have required hospitalization.
