Monkey pox: first two cases confirmed in Quebec

The first two cases of people infected with monkeypox in Quebec were confirmed on Thursday, indicates the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MSSS).

“Twenty other cases of genital ulcerative lesions are currently under investigation,” the official statement said.

Investigations are currently underway to determine the links between the reported cases and possible infected contacts.

Health specialists have thus been warned of the appearance of the virus, and will have to report possible cases to the regional public health department.

The MISS was nevertheless reassuring, and added “Although vigilance is required, monkeypox is contracted by prolonged and close contact with an infectious person. Its contagiousness is therefore considered limited compared to other viruses (influenza, COVID-19, etc.)”.

As a reminder, here is the list of symptoms of monkeypox.

If you have had close contact with someone with them (sexual contact or living under the same roof), you should monitor for symptoms and avoid sex “until 21 days following last contact”.
