Monetary poverty affected 1,817,000 people in 2022, according to the EPHC

Asunción, IP Agency.- The Permanent Household Survey (EPHC), in its poverty measurement indicators, showed that monetary poverty (income less than a basic consumption basket) had an incidence of 24.7% during 2022.

This figure means that around 1,817,000 reside in households with incomes that do not cover a basic basket estimated for the year 2022.

In urban areas, this basic consumption basket is Gs. 852,373 per month per person, and affected around 912,000 people with incomes of less than Gs. 27,512 per day, according to estimates.

In rural areas, the basic consumption basket is estimated at Gs. 587,890 per month per person, and affected 905,000 people with incomes of less than Gs. 19,930 per day.

The poverty estimates were made from the EPHC of the fourth quarter of 2022, which had a representative sample of 6,000 households in nine departments of the country, with representation of urban and rural areas.

Extreme poverty

From these estimates, the sub-calculation of extreme poverty is made, which corresponds to people with less income to cover a basic basket of only food.

This indicator increased from 3.9% to 5.6% at the country level between 2021 and 2022. The greatest increase was 2.5% for rural areas. This represents some 273,379 people with income below Gs. 10,539 per day.

In urban areas, the figure affected some 141,488 people with incomes below Gs. 11,540 per day.

The figures were published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) on its web portal.
