It was an expected victory for Mondo Duplantis in the 2024 Diamond League Finals. He set a new competition record and was the only one over 6 meters. Daniel Ståhl landed in fourth place in the discus final.
Seven would compete for the 2024 Diamond League pole vault title in Brussels and one of them was, of course, the dominant Mondo Duplantis. Would he be able to round out the season by claiming his fourth straight Diamond League title?
Mondo’s first jump he did at a height of 5.62 and as usual he soared high over the bar. He then chose to stand over the next height which was 5.72 and also the height after that which was 5.82.
With him up to 5.92, Mondo Duplantis had Emmanouil Karalis from Greece, Ben Broeders from Belgium and Sam Kendricks from the USA. Mondo took the height in the first attempt while all the others pulled away and the victory was thus secured for Mondo.
He then chose to set the bar at 6.11, a new competition record, and he offered the audience a really nice jump and passed immediately. After that, it was all over for Mondo and he thanked the officials and his fellow competitors for a well-executed competition.
Daniel Ståhl finished fourth
There were also seven men in the discus ring vying for the Diamond League title, and even there we had a Swede to start, namely Daniel Ståhl.
Daniel, who broke a new personal best during the Finncamp with 69.03, opened the final with a throw of 64.63, a throw that took him up to second place at the start of the competition.
Already in the first round, Matthew Denny kicked the discus away stumbling near the 70 meter mark. The discus steamed down to 69.96, a new New Zealand record and a clear lead.
Daniel’s second throw resulted in a cross in the protocol and he was overtaken by Kristjan Ceh from Slovenia with 64.94 and before the third round Daniel was third. In the third round we saw a frustrated Daniel once again step over and the Austrian Lukas Weißhaidinger poked Daniel down to fourth place. The fourth throw, however, meant an increase to 66.26 for Daniel Ståhl, who was again third. But the competition had tightened and from second to fourth place only 30 centimeters separated.
In the fifth round, Lithuanian Mykolas Alekna got a throw that measured 68.86 and Daniel was back in fourth place. He now only had one last throw to improve his position.
Unfortunately, the last throw was in the cage and Daniel Ståhl finishes fourth in the 2024 Diamond League final. And Matthew Denny won with his first throw of 69.96.
Tomorrow, Saturday, the Diamond League final awaits Andreas Kramer in the 800 meters.

Mondo Duplantis Dominates Diamond League Finals with New Competition Record
Published: September 13, 2024 | 21:31
The 2024 Diamond League Finals have come to a close, and it was a day of triumph for Mondo Duplantis, who secured his fourth consecutive Diamond League title in the pole vault event. The Swedish athlete’s impressive performance saw him set a new competition record, cementing his position as one of the world’s top pole vaulters.
Duplantis’ Dominant Display
The highly anticipated pole vault final featured seven talented athletes vying for the top spot. Mondo Duplantis, the clear favorite, did not disappoint. He began his campaign with a comfortable clearance of 5.62 meters, followed by a strategic decision to pass on the next two heights, 5.72 and 5.82 meters. This tactical move allowed him to conserve energy and focus on the higher bars.
At 5.92 meters, Duplantis found himself in a tight contest with Emmanouil Karalis of Greece, Ben Broeders of Belgium, and Sam Kendricks of the USA. However, with a first-time clearance, Duplantis took the lead and never looked back. His victory was all but assured, and he went on to set a new competition record of 6.11 meters, delighting the Brussels crowd with an impressive jump.
Ståhl Finishes Fourth in Discus Final
In the discus throw event, Sweden’s Daniel Ståhl fought valiantly for a top-three finish. Despite opening with a respectable 64.63 meters, Ståhl found himself in a fiercely competitive field. Matthew Denny of New Zealand stunned the crowd with a new national record of 69.96 meters in the first round, taking an early lead.
Ståhl’s subsequent throws saw him fluctuate between second and fourth place, struggling to find consistency. A fourth-round effort of 66.26 meters briefly lifted him back into third, but ultimately, he had to settle for fourth position, narrowly missing out on a podium finish.
Other Notable Performances
The discus final was marked by dramatic twists and turns, with Kristjan Ceh of Slovenia and Lukas Weißhaidinger of Austria trading places in the top three. Mykolas Alekna of Lithuania eventually secured second spot, while Ceh took bronze.
