The Venezuelan Observatory of Social Conflict (OVCS) documented in its report Social conflict – August 2024 that during the eighth month of the year 413 protests were recorded.
Pedro Urruchurtu, one of the six opposition members who have sought asylum in the residence of the Argentine Embassy in Caracas, urged the international community to join the efforts of the southern nation and Brazil to obtain safe-conduct passes that will allow them to leave Venezuela.
In international affairs, the Czech Republic sent a diplomatic note to Caracas requesting an explanation regarding the Czech citizen detained in Venezuela.

The European Commission said on Monday, September 16, that Venezuela’s arrest of two Spanish citizens and one Czech citizen is “regrettable” and that it is following the situation with “concern.”
“It is regrettable that the Venezuelan regime has arrested European citizens,” said Peter Stano, spokesman for the European Commission’s foreign affairs department, at the institution’s daily press conference.
The official said that the Commission stands in solidarity with Spain and the Czech Republic. However, he stressed that both countries have the consular responsibility to deal with this situation affecting their nationals, the Spaniards Andrés Martínez Adasme and José María Basoa Valdovinos, and the Czech Jan Darmovrzal.
2. OVCS recorded 413 protests during August 2024 in Venezuela
The OVCS reported on Monday, September 16 that in its report Social conflict – August 2024 that during the eighth month of the year 413 protests were recorded.
“89% for Civil and Political Rights (DCP) and 11% for Economic, Social, Cultural and Environmental Rights (Desca),” the NGO stated on its X account (formerly Twitter).
He also indicated that the states that led the protests were Sucre and Anzoátegui. There were 344 protests for the right to political participation and 15 labor protests. They also documented 22 demonstrations that were repressed in 9 states.

3. Opposition member Pedro Urruchurtu, who has sought asylum in the Argentine Embassy in Caracas, requested safe passage
One of the six opposition members who have taken refuge in the residence of the Argentine Embassy in Caracas, Pedro Urruchurtu, urged the international community on Monday, September 16, to join the efforts of the southern nation and Brazil to obtain safe-conduct passes that will allow them to leave Venezuela.
“We are grateful to Argentina and Brazil for their solidarity and protection during these hours. We urge the international community to join the efforts of these nations to obtain safe-conduct passes,” said Urruchurtu, International Coordinator of the Vente Venezuela party, led by María Corina Machado, in X.
Urruchurtu denounced that there is a “permanent siege and harassment” against the residence of the Argentine Embassy in the Venezuelan capital, where the six activists entered 180 days ago.
The Czech Republic has sent a diplomatic note to Caracas demanding clarifications regarding a Czech citizen detained in Venezuela on charges of “subversive activity” to “destabilize the country,” Czech Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mariana Wernerova said on September 16.
“In this note we request detailed information about the case and consular contact. Our diplomats are in contact with colleagues from the US and Spanish foreign ministries,” Wernerova said in the note, which was sent from the Czech Embassy in Bogotá, Colombia.
Czech citizen Jan Darmovrzal was arrested along with two Spaniards and three Americans who, in addition to alleged “subversive activities,” were accused of attempted murder of public officials, including Nicolás Maduro.
Edmundo González met with former Spanish Prime Minister José María Aznar on Monday, September 16, while on September 17 he will be in the Congress of Deputies to meet with the leader of the Popular Party (PP), Alberto Núñez Feijóo.
González will visit the Lower House a week after the plenary session of Congress approved the request to recognise him as president-elect, at the request of the PP.
Aznar is the third former prime minister to meet with González, after Mariano Rajoy and the socialist Felipe González held a meeting with him, recognising him as president-elect.
6. Canadian Embassy in Venezuela urged to start a “transition process” in Venezuela
The Canadian Embassy in Caracas has urged Venezuelan authorities to initiate a transition process in the country.
“Canada reiterates its calls on Venezuelan authorities to respect democracy and human rights and begin the transition process in recognition of the true results of the elections,” it said on X (formerly Twitter) on September 15.
He also indicated that he will continue to support Venezuela in its desire to live in a peaceful and democratic society.
