An unlikely story that is making headlines on the other side of the Pyrenees.
Mom is 68 years old: Ana Obregon hits the headlines. Indeed, this actress known for her roles in Spanish action films, appeared with a newborn baby in her arms on the front page of people magazine Hola. A photo taken in front of a Florida maternity ward that sparked a wave of comments and outrage, in Spain and elsewhere. Rather twice than once.

First, because as in France, surrogacy (GPA, called “surrogacy” in Spain) is prohibited on the other side of the Pyrenees. The political class went there with its comments. “It is a practice that is not legal in Spain, which is legally recognized as a form of violence once morest women”said the Spanish Minister for Equality, Irene Montero (Podemos). “Let’s not forget the reality of these precarious women (who are carrying a baby for someone else), at risk of poverty”.

But her granddaughter, conceived with the sperm of her son who died in May 2020 of cancer at the age of 27. “It was Aless’s last wish, to give birth to a child of his own. And that’s how he communicated it verbally to his father and to me a week before his death”she confided to the magazine ¡Hola!. “This little girl is not my daughter, but my granddaughter”she adds. “She’s Aless’s daughter and when she grows up I’ll tell her her dad was a hero so she’ll know who she is and how proud she can be. The decision to start the surrogacy process , I took it the day my child went to heaven”.
