“Mold, Dirt and Vermin”: The Dutch Star Caused a Scandal

Cody Gakpo was the leader of the Dutch national team in the group stage. He scored two goals and if it wasn’t for him, the “Oranje” might not have even made it through the first stage of the competition. However, the 25-year-old’s great play is no surprise to anyone. Since he delighted the world in the 2021/2022 season, playing for PSV (12 goals and 12 assists in 27 league matches), he can’t complain regarding a lack of publicity.

The footballer himself is not one of the swindlers. He is rather modest. And very pious. – Faith helps me not only in my career, but also in my whole life. It is a lifestyle for me. I take the Bible with me every day, regardless of where I am. I read it. I talk to people regarding it every day. I always try to learn something from it. It never ceases to inspire me – said Gakpo, quoted by lfc.pl.

– I have always been looking for something like this and now, for the last three or four years, I have been diving deeper and deeper into this faith. It is regarding learning how to live life with the talents that God has given us. There are many texts in the Bible on this subject – he added.

The Netherlands became too small for him in 2023. In January, he moved to Liverpool. The Reds paid 42 million euros. It was not money thrown down the drain. The winger quickly broke into the squad and has remained there to this day. Last season, he played 53 matches. He scored 16 goals and recorded 5 assists.

Better on the pitch than at property management

Despite its clear principles and professed values, Gakpo became famous due to the scandalous conditions in the apartments that the “Oranje” star rents.

– Rats run around the house. One time, one of them ran into the living room. It definitely wasn’t a mouse. Do you see the bite marks on my sofa? I don’t dare to be here – one of the women living in an apartment belonging to Gakpo told De Limburger.

The aforementioned apartments in Rotterdam, Roermond, Weert, Geleen and Dordrecht are the result of the Liverpool footballer’s investment. He invested a lot of capital in them. The rent prices are high. Tenants have to pay around 900 euros per month. That’s over 3,500 złoty. In addition, they complain regarding the small size.

– A rat ran into my living room there. It scared me to death. I saw it running and it was a rat with a long tail. It was definitely not an ordinary mouse – another resident tells De Limburger, pointing to a crack in the wall.

He reacted

Gakpo did not ignore the disturbing reports. He asked for help from Stefan Stals, who works at Elevate Finance, which deals with rent collection and tenant affairs. In an interview with the Daily Star, he denied, however, that he had had to “fight” with rats. He added that he had personally appeared at four of the eleven apartments in Roermond owned by Gakpo. However, he admitted that they had indeed had to deal with a mouse infestation.

The Dutchman has a valid contract with Liverpool. The contract expires on June 30, 2028. Gakpo earns around 650 thousand złoty per week. It seems that it is enough to provide the tenants of his apartments with humane conditions. On the other hand, he does not rent them out himself. Nevertheless, they are branded with his name. On Tuesday, Gakpo will try to lead his team to advance to the quarterfinals of Euro 2024.
