Within three years MOL MOHU Zrt. Set up 4,500 modern textile collection containers across the country. This is likely to quadruple the number of textile containers available.
The new tamper-proof containers, made in Hungary, can hold approximately 250 kg of textiles in one go. Disposed of textile, clothing and shoe waste is sent to a sorting system (pretreatment) and then recycled or reused, depending on its condition.
Eleven kilograms of textile waste per year
According to an EU survey, a European buys an average of 26 kg of textiles every year and throws 11 kg into the trash. The majority of used clothing and textile waste (87%) is incinerated or sent to a landfill. Clothing and textiles that are thrown into the trash bin pose a major burden on the environment. According to an EU survey, less than half of used clothing is reused or recycled. Only 1% is recycled into clothing products because the technologies that make this possible are slow to come to market.
Around 6,000 containers by 2027
In order to best dispose of the large amount of textile waste, the MOHU wants to increase the current number of 1,500 textile collection containers nationwide to 6,000 by 2027. Such containers will be set up in all towns with more than 2,000 inhabitants. Municipalities and retail stores can apply to place containers online on the MOHU collection container application page. After a successful assessment and conclusion of the contract, the free installation begins. Regular emptying is carried out by subcontractors. The first containers of this type can already be found directly at landfills and in retail stores, and soon also in cities such as Mohács, Nyergesújfalu, Tiszafüred and Sárbogárd.
