Arjuna Award: Indian pacer Mohammed Sham has been recommended by the Board of Cricket (BCCI) for this year’s Arjuna Award, according to sources. 33-year-old Mohammad Shami was included in the award list for his brilliant performance in the ODI World Cup. The BCCI had made a special request to the sports ministry to include Shami’s name in the list. Shami took 24 wickets in seven matches in this World Cup.
There are also indications that Shami may feature in India’s upcoming two-match Test series once morest South Africa. Shami has taken 55 wickets in three World Cups. Shami holds the record of taking the most wickets by an Indian player in a World Cup edition. The first Test Boxing Day match will be played at Centurion on December 26. Then the second match will be held in Cape Town from January 3. The ministry had constituted a 12-member committee to decide the sports awards for this year, including Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna Award and Arjuna Award.
Justice AM Khanwilkar, who retired from the Supreme Court, is the chairman of the committee. Apart from him, six former international athletes are also in this committee. Hockey player Dhanraj Pillai, former rower Kamlesh Mehta, former boxer Akhil Kumar, women’s shooter and current national coach Shuma Shirur, former cricketer Anjum Chopra, badminton player Tripti Murgunde and powerlifter Farman Pasha are also members of the panel.
