Mohammad Shami, Team India’s best bowler in ICC World Cup 2023, has become the biggest fortune of Indian cricket following the 2015 World Cup. There were many ups and downs during these times but Shami overcame it all and played a crucial role in making India the biggest power in world cricket.
Shami’s exceptional bowling performance throughout the tournament was a highlight. With 24 wickets in eight matches, including three impressive five-wicket hauls, Shami rattled the opposition batting whenever captain Rohit Sharma turned to him.
At a recent PUMA promotional event, Shami opened up regarding the struggles he faced in the 2015 edition.
“I struggled with injuries during the 2015 tournament. My knee was swollen before I started. I had two options, go for surgery immediately or play in the tournament and have surgery later. I chose to play despite the pain. When the team was going back to the hotel following the matches, I went to the hospital for the injection. “Everything else fades when you play for the country,” he said.
After the 2015 World Cup, Shami underwent knee surgery and described the intense experience.
“When I regained consciousness, I inquired when I would be able to play. The doctor’s response was, ‘Walking without a limp would be a significant achievement, and avoid playing. It all depends on your approach to rehabilitation. I thought my career was over,’ he added.
However, Shami’s story took a remarkable turn as he not only recovered but became the highest wicket-taker for India in the Cricket World Cup, taking 55 wickets in 18 World Cup matches.
