After various escapades, former Dutch top talent Mohamed Ihattaren wanted to make a fresh start in the Czech Republic.

At the beginning of January, Jindrich Trpisovsky, the coach of Slavia Prague, even gave special praise to the 22-year-old, who was once predicted to have a great future: “He has done a lot of work in the last month. He lost a few pounds and gained a lot of muscle mass.”

But after almost three months in Prague, things are going downhill again for Ihattaren. Two weeks ago, the former Eindhoven professional was transferred to training with the second team. The club justified the decision with fitness problems.

However, Ihattaren’s lack of fitness should not have surprised anyone. After all, the attacking midfielder, who made his debut for PSV at the age of 16, hasn’t played a competitive game for more than a year and a half.

With this in mind, Slavia took a big risk at the beginning of December when the club decided to offer Ihattaren a one-year contract with an option for a further three years.

After the Dutchman was relegated to the second team, which plays in the third Czech league, the national press is expecting the worst. “It looks as if the courageous attempt will fail,” said idnes.cz, for example. Ihattaren has not yet been used in the B team either.

Public prosecutor’s office is investigating former top talent

The situation hasn’t gotten any easier for Ihattaren in the past few weeks. The Dutch public prosecutor’s office recently confirmed investigations against a young man from Vleuten, where the footballer lived.

According to the ANP news agency, these are Ihattaren. Accordingly, the long-time junior national player is charged with bodily harm in addition to “attempted incitement to threaten”.

Ihattaren was arrested in February 2023 and released a few days later. According to various media, there is said to have been an argument with his girlfriend at the time, Yasmine Driouech.

A short time later, Driouech wanted to withdraw her statement. The couple even got married in May last year. However, the prosecution does not want to settle the case without a judge.

It is by no means the first time that the former PSV jewel has attracted negative headlines. Ihattaren’s departure from Eindhoven to Juventus Turin in 2021 did not go smoothly after several instances of indiscipline.

Moving to Italy doesn’t work out

Once in Italy, Ihattaren was sent straight to Sampdoria. However, the loan plan went terribly wrong: he didn’t play a single minute for the Serie A club. After returning from his summer vacation already overweight, the then 19-year-old disappeared without a trace for several weeks in the fall.

A loan to Ajax Amsterdam back home in 2022 also did not bring the desired success. Instead, Dutch media reported on Ihattaren’s connections to the criminal milieu.

Mohamed Ihattaren was used almost exclusively for the second team at Ajax

“It turns out that members of the Mocro mafia, who have to answer in the Marengo trial, drove from Ihattaren to the trial in ‘De Bunker’ in Amsterdam Osdorp,” explained crime reporter John van den Heuvel on NPO Radio 1.

The car was later found burned out. According to van den Heuvel, it was probably arson.

In September 2022, Ihattaren’s gray Porsche also burned down in Utrecht. The bizarre thing: Ihattaren’s big brother’s car had already been destroyed by fire a week earlier.

Sorted out by Ajax and Juve

In terms of sport, Ihattaren was unable to rehabilitate himself either at Ajax, where he played five times in the second team and only once in the first team, or at parent club Juventus (zero appearances). This was followed by the termination of the contract in the summer of 2023, which, according to the Italians, was done by mutual agreement.

A subsequent stay at the Turkish club Samsunspor ended after just two days because, according to the club, Ihattaren made “unacceptable demands”.

Slavia Prague finally extended their hand to the former offensive hope, but given recent developments it is difficult to imagine that Ihattaren will ever gain a foothold in professional football again.
