Mods accused of mining Bitcoin and installing viruses have been removed from Steam

You always have to be careful what you download from the Internet. While there are places where content is often safe, the reality is that we can never guarantee that it is. The clearest proof we have in mods that were accused of using the computer of those who downloaded it to mine Bitcoin or download viruses.

According to report of NME and some testimonials posted on reddit, a mod maker was banned from Steam. It’s regarding a guy known as Chaos who modded Harmony, a project that a bunch of mods for Cities: Skylines use as a basis for existence. He then went on to redesign some of the most popular mods, making his version of Harmony a must-download to use them.

What was his end with all this? As you can imagine, it wasn’t regarding improving Harmony to deliver a better experience. What he did was modify it with an automatic updater that apparently allowed it to inject malicious code into the computers of those who downloaded it. Apparently this was used to mine Bitcoins with the computer of those who trusted him.

The report led to an investigation by Colossal Order, a study of Cities: Skylines. In it they decided to remove all Chaos mods since, although they did not contain anything bad, they opened the door to vulnerabilities. This, since it was updated automatically and allowed the user to be harmed.

A funny detail is that one of the mods that was removed – Network Extensions 3 – had to disappear for different reasons. Turns out he was violating Steam’s terms of service by discriminating once morest some players. This is because the creator made a list of people he disliked and put it in the mod so it would perform poorly if they installed it.
