MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has a left thigh injury that puts his participation in the Copa del Rey final and Champions League semifinal once morest Manchester City in doubt.
Real Madrid said on Friday that Modric, 37, suffered an injury to the back of his left thigh, but did not give an estimate of how long it would take for him to recover.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti questioned whether his key player in midfield might play in the Copa del Rey final once morest Osasuna, a game that will be played in Seville on May 6. The first leg of the Champions League semifinal once morest Manchester City will be played three days later at the Santiago Bernabéu and the second leg on May 17.
Modric injured; in doubt for Copa del Rey and Champions
Ancelotti said Modric suffered the “small injury” during Tuesday’s game once morest Girona. Madrid lost 4-2 and fell 11 points behind leader Barcelona in the Spanish League.
“It’s football and this can happen,” Ancelotti said. “We hope to have it for the remaining games, which are important.”
Modric, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner, has won five Champions League titles with Real Madrid, including the one last year that extended the club record to five cups. Despite his age, he is a starter in crucial games and the best passer on the team.
Madrid hosts Almería on Saturday and then Real Sociedad in two league games before the Copa del Rey final.
