Modi on Ukraine: – War cannot solve problems

India’s relationship with Russia is based on “mutual respect and trust”, according to Modi. He also says he appreciates Putin’s leadership.

The visit is Modi’s first to Russia in five years.

– Our relationship has been tested many times, but has emerged stronger each time, Modi said, thanking his “dear friend” Putin.

Discussed Ukraine

But the two leaders also discussed the Ukraine war, discussions that appear to have been very frank.

– Regarding Ukraine, I am glad that we were able to express our opinions openly and in detail, Modi said following the meeting.

The Ukrainian capital Kyiv was exposed to a Russian air attack on Monday, which hit a children’s hospital, among other things. The attack has met with massive international condemnation.

– When innocent children are killed, and when you see them die, it causes unbearable pain, Modi said, without mentioning or commenting on the attack directly.

– I know that war cannot solve problems. Solutions and peace talks cannot succeed between bombs, guns and bullets, the Indian Prime Minister added.

The statements are rarely clear from Modi, who has not wanted to criticize Putin directly for the war in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy disappointed

Putin responded to Modi’s comments by thanking him for trying to “find solutions to the most pressing problems”.

Several Western countries, particularly the United States, have sought to strengthen their ties with India in light of China’s growing influence. India’s views on the Ukraine war have nevertheless proved to be a contentious issue. In addition, Indian imports of Russian oil are at a record high level.

For India, the increasingly strong relationship between Russia and China is also a concern.

Modi arrived in Moscow on Monday and Putin said he was “very happy to see him”, according to the state news agency Tass.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, on the other hand, said it was “extremely disappointing to see the leader of the world’s largest democracy together with a bloody criminal in Moscow”.
