Bordeaux-Mérignac airport is beginning major modernization works by 2028 and is beginning the development of green energy production. Several transformation projects were announced this October 26 on the occasion of the presentation of the new flight program for the fall and winter and while the French aeronautical world is going through a week of public evacuation for emergency alerts. bomb, the sixth alert in a week in Mérignac.

2.7 million passengers will have passed through the Gironde airport between June and September, which expects more than 6 million travelers this year. This winter, 57 destinations will be offered by direct flight, including three new services for the department in Dakar, Rabat and Bucharest. A constant figure in recent years.

1 Billi Terminal, smoother and faster

The first transformation project concerns the Billi terminal reserved for flights of the low-cost airlines EasyJet and Ryanair. This terminal with simplified services will enter a work phase at the end of next summer. They aim to improve the reception of passengers in the departure area over 600 m². Jean Chadouteau, director of technical operations, detailed reinforced signage on the exterior passenger route, a protected exterior area for the route between hall B and the Billi terminal on the left, resized toilets, work to improve performance thermal, an outdoor terrace to be created as well as a landscaped space, but above all the expansion of the departures area in place of the outdoor Starbucks.

The project is to separate passenger flows with or without luggage at departure, to integrate a range of coffee shops in the waiting area. “It’s important that the course is as smooth and quick as possible. » The objective is for the whole thing to be ready and functional for 2025. A little more than 2 million euros of work has been undertaken.

2 A new building between halls A and B

In 2028, a new building will connect halls A and B of the airport. It will be responsible for absorbing traffic points. The new route will begin with a single security checkpoint, in the center of the two halls. Travelers will then be welcomed in a 4,800 m² waiting and shopping area before returning to their boarding lounges. 3,000 m² of shops, catering outlets, boutiques, etc. and an exhibition space have been designed. Work will begin in 2026. It is a project worth more than 100 million euros.

Simon Dreschel, chairman of the board of directors of Bordeaux airport, specifies that “80% of the commercial offer will then be located following security, just before the departure lounges, at the place where passengers will be able to take time to have fun.” It is the opposite trend currently. “Gaining commercial efficiency is a major challenge for the economic model of the airport company. » In this new building, “the local Aquitaine experience” “will be further highlighted. It will be views of Bordeaux and the region, but also more well-known local brands in the shops, South-West cuisine…

3 Solar panels in parking lots

A program of covering with shade structures equipped with photovoltaic panels has been launched. Since the end of September, the P0 car park with 276 spaces, closest to hall A on five silo levels, has reopened covered with 3,000 m² of solar panels. This is a contribution to the objective of a carbon neutral airport in 2035, supported last June by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, owner of the airport. The annual production announced is 0.6 Gwh. It corresponds to 4% of the consumption of the airport platform, it is the equivalent of that of 250 homes.

This will then be followed by the launch of a call for expressions of interest for a new renewable energy production project for the airport network and the surrounding area. The intention is to install photovoltaic shades over the 65,000 m² of the P4 car park, the furthest away, five minutes from the terminal and reserved for long-term parking with 3,424 spaces. This will be followed by geothermal energy planned for 2025 and the revegetation of intermediate spaces in the various car parks.
