Moderna, as well as vaccine makers Novavax and Pfizer, have developed versions of their vaccines targeting the Eris subvariants with BioNTech SE. Shortly before, the pharmaceutical company Pfizer had reported that its revised vaccine had been effective against Eris in a study with mice.

Eris is the nickname for EG.5 and is similar to the XBB.1.5 variant, a subvariant of the still dominant Omicron variant. The World Health Organization (WHO) has upgraded the new mutation of the coronavirus EG.5 (Eris) and put it under increased surveillance.

Waiting for vaccination recommendations

The vaccination recommendations of the National Vaccination Panel for the fall are still pending. When asked by KURIER, it said that “the final recommendation will be available in September in good time to be able to implement the vaccination campaigns that are planned from autumn and to be able to use new vaccines that we expect to be able to use them accordingly”. It must be taken into account “when which vaccines will be available, which in turn depends on the approval of the European authorities”.
