The exhibition aims and opens an interesting dialogue between the ancient exhibits and the works inspired by them by contemporary artists.
The exhibition is a co-organization of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Ilia and the visual artists Konstantinos Papamichalopoulos, painter, assistant professor at the School of Fine Arts of the University of Ioannina, and painter Evita Doufexis-Canellos, who took the initiative, wanting in this way to honor their special homeland.
Eight artists in visual conversation with the Museum’s exhibits
These are artists who maintain strong ties with the region and have important references in the history of the place, such as: Yiannis Adamakos, Kostas Varotsos, Evita Doufexi-Kanellou, Nikos Kaskouras, Angelika Korovesi, Konstantinos Papamihalopoulos, Maritsa Travlou and Nikos Toumazatos.
With respect and emotion, the artists bowed and inspired the works they present from the glorious local history. Schematic depictions of Centaurs, zoomorphic representations of lions, plant motifs, abstract geometric shapes and utilitarian objects in their evolution, become the continuation of the history of the birth place that is honored throughout time. This exhibition is also a tribute to the rich artistic legacy of the Prefecture of Ilia.
“Echoes” exhibition
Closely tied to her place, the painter Evita Douvexis Canellou, who comes from Pyrgos, is, so to speak, the soul of the exhibition and contributed significantly to its organization: “The relationship with Pyrgos and the people there is permanent and unbreakable,” she says herself in “ET” “I want to offer as much as I can to my country. The exhibition “Resonances” aims to contribute to the cultural prominence of the region. Ilia has always had special cultural characteristics and gathered the interest of the global archaeological community. We have also always been particularly proud of the Archaeological Museum of Olympia and its exhibits.”
Speaking regarding the conception of the idea of organizing this exhibition, he points out: “The Ephorate of Antiquities of Ilia contributes in practice to the continuation of the cultural heritage and thematics originating from the region, as is also the case through this exhibition. I was excited from the first moment the conversation started with them and felt proud that insightful scientists are serving and promoting the place. We all aim for the cultural potential of our region to be understood at an international level.
The idea started together with Konstantinos Papamihalopoulos. We started working on it for regarding a year, making trips to Olympia, studying, researching, Greek and foreign language literature, photographing the exhibits of the Museum of Olympia and the Tower, until we crystallized creative ideas.
The curator Erofili Kolia and her colleagues immediately embraced our idea, to present our proposal in the vestibule of the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. The help and guidance of archaeologist Mrs. Roulas Leventouris was invaluable.
With the help of the experienced art historian, Annita Patsouraki, the exhibition began to take shape. With the kind support of the Greek High School of Pyrgos, which has elected an enlightened Board of Directors, as well as the local winery “Ktima Brindzikis”, the Pyrgos District and Haris Kanellakopoulos, we proceeded with the implementation.”
“Resonances” exhibition: “Harmonious collision of worlds”
For his part, the painter Konstantinos Papamichalopoulos points out: “The exhibition introduces the viewers to a harmonious clash of worlds, however strange it may sound. Ancient objects, once symbols of a pious and illustrious civilization, now stand alongside the dynamic creations of contemporary artists. This dialogue highlights how the roots of the past continue to nourish the blossoming tree of modern Greek art.”
Art historian Annita Patsouraki, who is curating the exhibition, notes among other things: “Artists with a variety of expressions came together with a common dialogue of creative spirit and common visions there, where universal concepts are understood, forming an integral part of our cultural heritage.”
