A serious infection caused by using a tampon almost took the life of model Lauren Wasser. In October 2012, when she was 24, she used a tampon and then began experiencing flu-like symptoms. In a matter of hours, she was on the verge of death and had both legs amputated.
The model, now 36, was rushed to hospital, where she suffered two heart attacks. Her kidneys failed and the tissues in her legs began to decompose.
Doctors had no choice but to amputate his right leg and some toes on his left foot. In 2018, she underwent another surgery to amputate her left leg — she was in so much pain that she found walking unbearable.
In an interview with the Life Uncut podcast, Lauren stated that the entire process happened very quickly. “My life, in 24 hours, completely changed and there was no going back,” she laments.
Toxic shock syndrome
She developed toxic shock syndrome (TSS), a rare but potentially fatal condition caused by an infection that can occur from using a tampon, menstrual cup, or from an infected wound.
The condition is caused by bacteria entering the body and releasing fatal toxins into the bloodstream. Typically, the problem stems from the inappropriate use of tampons. Patients often present with a high temperature, muscle pain and rashes.
Lauren said that, on the day she was admitted, despite not feeling well, she decided to go out to meet a group of friends. They immediately realized she was feeling unwell and sent her home.
Hours passed and her mother, without having heard from her daughter, called the police to check her home. A police officer arrived and saw that she was sick, but did not consider that Lauren needed to go to the hospital.
“I was extremely hot, with a fever of 41.5°C, I just wanted to take off all my clothes. My dog was jumping on me ferociously and barking at me. He knew something was wrong. My body was shutting down,” he recalls.
Hours later, Lauren was found face down on the floor, unconscious. She was taken to the emergency room, where she suffered two heart attacks. Her organs began to fail and she was placed in a medically induced coma for a week and a half.
Hospital staff gave her a 1% chance of survival and told Lauren’s parents to prepare for the worst.
“My parents mightn’t understand why a healthy 24-year-old girl was dying before them,” he says.

Known as “the girl with golden legs” due to her golden prosthetics, Lauren has walked the runway for Louis Vuitton and appeared in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Glamour. Today, she seeks to warn women regarding what happened to her.
“I was an active young woman and used the same brand of tampons that I had been using since I started menstruating. People think they are invincible, but no one is off limits,” she says.
