Modder added ray tracing to the original Doom

Classic shooter Doom, released in 1993, got unofficial support for ray tracing. Modder alias sultim-t added both ray tracing and DLSS from NVIDIA to the game.

The mod called PrBoom: Ray Traced requires an RTX series graphics card to work. It is noted that tracing reduces the frequency from 5000 to 239 frames / s even on the most powerful RTX 3090. So far, the author does not plan to implement support for cards from other manufacturers.

The mod is distributed separately, so you will need a copy of the original game to install. You can download the modification at GitHubwhere the enthusiast has already posted an updated version with corrected lighting.

The author also shared a trailer where you can see how the shadows of monsters react to explosions and dynamic light sources. With ray tracing, Doom has become much darker and more contrasty, and reflections have appeared on some surfaces.

A few years ago, NVIDIA officially introduced ray-traced version of Quake II. Later the game was also added support for AMD graphics cards. Early this year in Quake II RTX implemented AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution scaling technology.
