DHL Supply Chain expands air transport and improves distribution of Ford spare parts in Brazil
DHL Supply Chain, a global leader in storage and distribution, intensified and expanded the use of air transport in the distribution of Ford aftermarket parts in Brazil. Now, in addition to urgent deliveries, all distribution to the North Region is also carried out by air, which has brought a significant reduction in delivery times.
With the support of a new subsidiary of DHL Supply Chain close to Guarulhos airport, the operation also improved cargo preparation and dispatch, which reduced damage
In addition to urgent deliveries, the logistics operator already uses air transport to distribute parts to the North of the country
“Brazil has a great tradition of road transport, but, given its size, there are also good opportunities for distribution via air, mainly relying on cargo consolidation and the operational scale of logistics partners such as DHL. We have invested a lot in this area, such as our new branch in Guarulhos which, among other benefits, has a structure for palletizing air cargo and is located less than 10 minutes from the airport”, says Luiz Brunherotto, Transport Director at DHL Supply Chain.
“Ford has a strong focus on customer service and getting parts to dealers quickly is a big priority. By concept, we already serve the North region fully by air, but dependence on commercial aircraft limits service, due to flight availability or capacity. The partnership with DHL brings us greater flexibility and a reduction in the service time that we want to provide to the Ford customer”, says Carlos Laprega, After-Sales Logistics Manager at Ford South America.
The company is also a Ford partner in road transport, serving the entire national territory with end-to-end visibility and proximity to dealerships.
DHL Supply Chain provides a complete solution for the distribution of Ford spare parts in Brazil (road and air), including collection of cargo at the automaker’s Cajamar warehouse, transfer to the DHL Transport Headquarters in Jandira or to Guarulhos and Viracopos airports, and final delivery to dealerships and distributors across the country (last mile). The volume of SKUs managed reaches 40 thousand.
“We also offer two important advantages. Due to our scale, Ford is able to load its cargo on cargo planes on the Manaus route, transporting a greater variety of items. Furthermore, we have direct access to airline systems, providing end-to-end visibility of freight in almost real time”, highlights Luiz Brunherotto.
In road transport (which covers all other regions, with the exception of the North), DHL Supply Chain uses dedicated cars and provides access to its national distribution network, currently with more than 5 thousand vehicles. One of the differences is the express modality that allows agile deliveries over long distances with a lead time similar to air. Also noteworthy is the application of tracking technologies (via the DHL MySupplyChain platform) and smart labels (which facilitate shipment and tracking of cargo).
“We designed this operation to offer a quality experience to dealerships. They can track their orders online and we interact directly with them.
We even carry out visits and make special deliveries if necessary. Everything for really close service”, adds Vanessa Pelintra, Director of Operations at DHL Supply Chain.

How does the partnership between DHL and Ford improve the speed and efficiency of spare parts delivery to dealerships?
**Interview with Luiz Brunherotto, Transport Director at DHL Supply Chain, and Carlos Laprega, After-Sales Logistics Manager at Ford South America**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Luiz and Carlos. DHL Supply Chain recently expanded its air transport operations for Ford spare parts in Brazil. Can you start by explaining the reasons behind this expansion?
**Luiz Brunherotto:** Absolutely! Brazil’s vast geography creates unique challenges for logistics. Traditionally, road transport has been the go-to mode due to our infrastructure. However, we’ve recognized significant opportunities for air transport, particularly in the North region. By expanding our air capabilities, we can significantly reduce delivery times for urgent shipments and enhance overall service quality for our customers.
**Editor:** Carlos, from Ford’s perspective, how does this partnership with DHL enhance your supply chain operations?
**Carlos Laprega:** Speed and efficiency are critical for us. Our dealers rely on prompt delivery of spare parts to meet the needs of their customers. The partnership with DHL allows us to serve the North region entirely by air, eliminating delays that can occur due to dependence on commercial flights. This means we can respond quicker to dealership demands and maintain a high level of customer service.
**Editor:** That’s impressive! Luiz, can you elaborate on how the new branch at Guarulhos airport has contributed to improving the logistics process?
**Luiz Brunherotto:** Certainly! Our new facility is strategically located just minutes from the airport, enabling us to streamline cargo preparation and dispatch. This proximity not only speeds up operations but also reduces the risk of damage to our shipments, which is crucial when handling sensitive spare parts for Ford.
**Editor:** Carlos, how does this air transport capability impact Ford’s overall logistics strategy beyond the North region?
**Carlos Laprega:** The air transport expansion complements our existing road transport operations. While we continue to rely on our extensive road network—currently serviced by over 5,000 dedicated vehicles—air transport provides us with flexibility and the ability to manage a broader range of SKUs, approximately 40,000 in total. This integrated approach enables us to maintain visibility and efficiency throughout our supply chain.
**Editor:** Luiz, could you touch upon any technological advancements that support these logistics solutions?
**Luiz Brunherotto:** We leverage direct access to airline systems to provide real-time visibility of our freight. This level of tracking allows both DHL and Ford to monitor shipments closely, improving accountability and ensuring that we can swiftly address any potential issues that arise during transportation.
**Editor:** Thank you both for sharing these insights. It sounds like a significant improvement in Ford’s service capabilities through this partnership with DHL. Any final thoughts on future developments in this collaboration?
**Carlos Laprega:** We’re excited about the potential for continued growth and innovation in our logistics strategy, leveraging both air and road transport.
**Luiz Brunherotto:** Indeed, our focus will remain on optimizing our operations to ensure we meet the evolving needs of our customers—whether that’s through expanding air capabilities or enhancing road transport efficiency.
**Editor:** Thank you, Luiz and Carlos, for your time today. It’s fascinating to see how logistics innovations can drive better service in the automotive industry.
