After a beta testing phase, Epic Games has announced that its RealityScan app is now available on Apple’s mobile app store. Accessible free of charge, this tool from the firm behind “Fortnite” and the video game rendering engine Unreal Engine allows creators to transform objects in their environment into 3D models. These can thus be used in video games or other virtual reality or augmented reality projects.
In practice, once the application is launched, it requires an Epic Games account – all you need to do is take at least 20 photos of the object from all angles, with an iPhone or iPad. After scanning the object, the app processes and assembles the model in the cloud. It is then able to export the model in high resolution to the Sketchfab platform, where it is possible to host, share and sell 3D, VR and AR content.
This application stems from the acquisition by Epic Games, in 2021, of Capturing Reality, the company behind the photogrammetry software for RealityCapture 3D scans. Epic Games plans to make its app compatible with Android next year.
