Mobile phone at the level of electromagnetic waves above authorized thresholds: what impact on health?

2023-09-13 21:22:07

According to the National Frequency Agency (ANFR), the electromagnetic waves emitted by the “Apple” iPhone 12 exceed the thresholds allowed by European regulations. The sale of this device is therefore temporarily banned in France by the authority, but the American manufacturer disputes this conclusion. This type of malfunction can have consequences on the health of users according to scientific studies.

The National Frequency Agency (ANFR) asks “Apple” to “withdraw the iPhone 12 from the French market as of September 12, 2023, following an exceeding of the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) limit observed on this model”.

As part of its missions to monitor the radio equipment market and control public exposure to electromagnetic waves, the ANFR carries out checks on mobile phones placed on the French market.

She recently checked the Specific Absorption Rates (SAR) of 141 phones including the iPhone 12. These devices were then subject to the usual testing. “control measures by accredited laboratories, which allow the ANFR to ensure that the SAR values comply with European regulations”.

ANFR measurements revealed a “member” SAR value exceeding this limit, i.e. 5.74 W/kg. On the other hand, the “trunk” DAS values are consistent. Therefore, Apple must immediately take all measures to prevent the affected phones present in the supply chain from being made available on the market. For devices already sold, Apple must take corrective action as soon as possible to bring the affected devices into compliance. Otherwise, it will be up to Apple to recall them.

L’ANFR

It is up to the Apple brand to carry out “a corrective update for these phones” before a new check by the authority.

ANFR urges Apple to implement all available means to quickly remedy this malfunction. Failing this, it will be up to Apple to recall copies already sold.

The National Frequency Agency

Contacted by AFP (Agence France Presse), Apple assured that “the iPhone 12 is certified as compliant” to the standards defined throughout the world by numerous international organizations. The Californian giant says it has provided the ANFR with the results of independent laboratory studies carried out by third parties to prove that its devices meet standards. He disputes the Agency’s conclusions.

In the field of radio frequencies, “exposure to high levels of electromagnetic waves can cause heating of biological tissues (the skin, but also the internal tissues of the body), this is called the thermal effect” (…).

In the current state of knowledge, the work of ANSES (the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety) does not highlight a link of causality between exposure to waves emitted by mobile communications and effects on health.

Certain publications nevertheless mention a possible increase in the risk of brain tumors, in the long term, for intensive users of mobile phones, which is why the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) classifies radiofrequencies as “possible carcinogenic”. To limit exposure to waves, it is recommended to favor the acquisition of mobile phones displaying the lowest SAR (Specific Absorption Rate).
