Charges on mobile, landline and Internet bills have increased by up to 20% of the citizens from the providers in the last period in relation to the previous charges. This is happening according to the newspaper “TA NEA” following the “stop” in the requested readjustment of the contracts by the government. In fact, for almost all expiring contracts, telecommunications companies propose new increased tariffs to their customers.
The providers’ argument
The provider’s argument is that following 12, 18 or 24 months (which is the most common) the offer that the company had made to you has expired and now it proposes you to continue in the same program but with an increase of e.g. 4 euros to 7 euros in a package that was previously offered at 24 to 27 euros/month. It is noteworthy that according to a recent Eurostat survey, telecommunications in Greece are at least 50% more expensive than the European Union average.
The discounts
In particular, telecom providers are asking for the increases since consumers are now out of contract (due to expiry). In fact, some companies call subscribers 3 or even 5 months before the end of their contract, pointing out to them that there is a special offer for them with an increase in fees, for example up to 20%. They advise subscribers to take up this offer immediately, as it won’t be available for long. The subscriber, regardless of whether he received discounted services or not from the price list, is not obliged to accept the proposed increase. He can request free of charge for him, if his contract has expired, his transfer to another provider’s network (portability). Of course, companies bet on the fact of consumer “passivity”. If the latter makes the move to request a change of provider then it is very likely that he will return to the original offer, i.e. the one that was valid for the last 12, 18 or 24 months.
International organizations (such as the EU, OECD, Ookla, etc.) rank Greece in 27th place in Europe and around 100th place worldwide. Typical is the case of Internet connection speeds where the actual speeds in our country differ greatly (they are lower) compared to the nominal ones.
The complaints
In cases where the following deviations occur, the subscriber has the right to terminate his contract free of charge if the problem is not corrected within 30 days:
In fixed networks: Deviations greater than 30% for ADSL networks and 20% for other technologies (e.g. VDSL, Fiber To The Home – FTTH) from the minimum speed value.
In mobile networks: Deviations greater than 10% from the value of the maximum speed, according to the conditions provided by the National Open Internet Regulation – EKAD (measurement when the user is outside and if he is not moving in a vehicle).
