Mobile Breast Cancer Screening Initiative Reaches Rural Areas: Promoting Women’s Health Awareness and Early Detection

As part of breast cancer screening for all women aged 50 to 74 and Pink October, the first Bourbonnaise mobile was present on Wednesday October 4 on the fairground in Gannat. Before starting his journey through 15 municipalities in the region.

Meet women

“The current state of medical desertification in rural areas correlated with a tense economic situation pushes women not to make appointments in hospitals or clinics to be screened,” says Doctor Marc Voitelier, president of the league once morest cancer of the Allier department. This is why this mobile project which goes out to meet people takes on its full meaning. An approach to be generalized to reduce geographical distance and to restrict waiting times for a traditional appointment which can extend beyond 6 months. “We must continue to raise awareness and prevent so that people become actors in their health journey,” continues Marc Voitelier. “Breast cancer screening is a priority for the MSA, because it allows rapid and more efficient treatment,” relates Denis Olléon, doctor at the MSA and who underlines the importance of reaching out to the population in rural areas. In two days, more than 70 appointments were made, which demonstrates the need for this initiative.

A simple approach

“We offer people who have made an appointment the opportunity to have their mammogram because the screening rate has fallen significantly in this area for multiple reasons,” informs Charles Sourice, communications manager for cancer screening in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. This very well equipped truck allows a first reading of the radio before it is sent digitally for a second opinion. If something is detected, the patient is referred to her attending physician. “Due to lack of financial means, people move away from the care and prevention pathway. Through our action we help them to get back into this process,” declares the young man.

Many partners

“I am very happy that Gannat is a step today for this brand new vehicle to prevent breast cancer,” declares Véronique Pouzadoux, mayor of the city. A health tool expected in rural areas to overcome difficulties in accessing care with professions in crisis such as radio technicians. Fortunately, partners are mobilizing like the region, health insurance, the cancer league, the regional health agency, and the Msa. “After a period of 6 months, women do not follow up to make an appointment; it was therefore important to act as close as possible to the territories concerned”, informs Pierre Darbelet, member of the ABIDE/03 screening structure.

Sustainability of the project

Faced with such a need for prevention, the question of the sustainability of the project is obvious. “The field network is essential, we must convey the same types of messages at all levels to maintain this dynamic with partners and find funding,” recalls Marc Voitelier. An initiative which aims to act on the physical and psychological health of the people supported and to encourage them to take care of their health. “The Bourbonnais show a lot of modesty and are tolerant of evil; this is why the link must be permanent so that populations feel supported,” concludes Marc Voitelier.
