Mitsubishi intends to sell electric and hybrid vehicles

Japan’s Mitsubishi Motors Corporation plans to have hybrid and battery electric vehicles make up its total new sales by the middle of the next decade, reflecting its further electrification strategy to maintain its competitiveness in key markets.

Mitsubishi said it would launch 16 new models over the next five years. Mitsubishi is a junior alliance partner with Renault and Nissan Motor Co.

Mitsubishi, known for its Outlander sports car, reaffirmed its commitment to its previous goal of making half of its new car sales electric by fiscal year 2030 and pledged, on Friday, to make them account for 100 percent of sales by fiscal year 2035.

Mitsubishi classifies plug-in hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and fully electric vehicles as electric vehicles. Electric vehicles accounted for regarding seven percent of the company’s total sales of new cars in fiscal year 2021.

Mitsubishi said that among the 16 models it plans to launch, there will be an all-electric vehicle model in partnership with Renault and another in partnership with Nissan. This came during a presentation by the company of its business plan for the period from 2023 to 2025.
