“The ND remains a dominant political force in Greece, the second or third largest center-right party in percentage terms in Europe,” said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during the discussion with Enrico Letta, in the context of the 28th annual “Economist Government Roundtable” conference.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said regarding the result of the European elections: “We had set a goal that we did not achieve and I take seriously the messages. There has been citizen fatigue due to the successive election contests but some have also chosen the European elections to send a message regarding the cost of living and this is the first issue on the agenda.”
He added, however, that the fundamental political dynamics had not changed. “There is, he said, a center-right party that attracts a lot of people with people who identify as right-wing but also people of the progressive center, something that seems elusive for other major EU parties.”
The prime minister said that the goal is to close the gap with Europe in the next 4 years, that he will not proceed with early elections and that they will take place in 2027 and he even added that those who had questioned him when he said so in his first term will be disproved and once more. “We will be judged at the end of the 4 years,” he said.
He described himself as a reformer by conviction. “We have a fresh strong mandate to implement the reforms”, he emphasized and underlined regarding the message he received from the citizens: “The message was sit down to work and do what you have committed to and we voted for you”.
