This was announced by the American ambassador to Greece George Tsounis from Alexandroupoli. On the agenda of the meeting is expected to raise all issues concerning the two countries, such as armaments, energy and the strategic partnership between Greece and the USA. Also, the issue of Ukraine, what is happening in the Middle East and of course Greek-Turkish relations will be discussed.
Mr. Mitsotakis will attend the event organized at the White House for the anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821 and will have a meeting with the American president.
Yesterday, speaking on SKY TV, when asked who he prefers, Joe Biden or Donald Trump, in view of the American elections in November, Mr. Mitsotakis replied: “Whoever the American people choose, we will respect their choice obviously. Greek-American relations are so strong at the moment that I don’t believe they will escape the tracks they have entered, regardless of who is elected.”
“On April 4, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will be in the Oval Office, where he will meet with President “Baidenopoulos”, the US ambassador to Greece, George Tsounis, announced at the East Macedonia & Thrace Forum. “The President of the USA loves Greece and the Greeks very much and we always stand by you,” he declared.
Excluding the level of bilateral relations, starting his speech at the Forum, Mr. Tsounis emphasized that US-Greece relations continue to be historically at their highest level and bilateral cooperation in Alexandroupoli is a key aspect of this relationship. He pointed out that the 5th US-Greece Strategic Dialogue held in Washington last month further developed this relationship and expressed the two countries’ common will to continue promoting their common goals for peace and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Western Balkans, the Black Sea region and beyond, based on shared democratic values.
In this context, he reserved hymns for Greece, noting that Greeks always do the right thing and act with values. “We are united by our common democratic values,” the American ambassador characteristically underlined and emphasized Greece’s global contribution, noting that democracy is only one of the things the world owes the Greeks.
Also, the American ambassador broadcast the message that Greece is the main ally of NATO, even speaking of an irreplaceable partner and ally that plays a crucial role in the defense of the south-eastern side of the Alliance.
In this light, he made a special reference to Northern Greece, highlighting the importance of the port of Alexandroupoli. “Eastern Macedonia and Thrace play a pivotal role, and under the auspices of the Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement, the importance of Alexandroupolis Port to US and NATO strategic interests continues to grow.” In fact, he underlined that through Alexandroupoli, Greece ensures the readiness of NATO, supporting critical logistical infrastructure for the entire Alliance.
Further highlighting the importance of the ports of Alexandroupoli and Northern Greece, he expressed the belief that they can play a greater role as an entry point for goods flowing from the south to the north, Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova.
Finally, he emphasized Greece’s energy role in the region. Alexandroupoli plays a key role in the energy transformation taking place in Greece and in this region, he specifically underlined and pointed out that by diversifying its energy sources, including through the new floating liquefied natural gas plant in Alexandroupoli, Greece is building a more secure future for its economy and for Europe. “We’re proud of the work we’ve done together in this area so far, and there’s more we can do,” he added.
