Mitsotakis for Athenian Riviera: We need more cycle paths and pedestrians 2024-07-16 06:24:26

“An idea which seemed very self-evident at the time. Is it possible to have this unique coastline and not have a way to cross it from one end to the other? Perhaps we too had not realized the very great difficulties that had to be overcome, so that the project might turn from an idea into a project with financing and an implementation schedule”, said Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the signing of the contract for the construction of the “Athenian Riviera” project.

The prime minister said that in September 2025 or 2-3 months following that the project will be ready. “I was reading an article in the Financial Times regarding the Athenian Riviera. Indeed, the development footprint is very important and not at the expense of the local communities”, noted Mr. Mitsotakis.

He pointed out that Elliniko is a project that the government received as an idea and is now in its implementation phase. “We want to be sure that the development will not be at the expense of the residents of the area,” he emphasized.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke regarding the importance of the project for the quality of life of all coastal municipalities. “We need more cycle paths and pedestrian paths in combination with the great emphasis we place on upgrading the means of transport”, he noted and talked regarding the new electric buses in Athens and the density of routes.

“We will be following the implementation of the project very closely and we are committed to being here at the opening to run on the bike that I prefer as a cyclist. First and above all, it will upgrade the quality of life of the residents”, stressed Mr. Mitsotakis.

Athenian Riviera – City Walk

The Athenian Riviera is the approximately 70 kilometers long coastline in the southeastern part of the prefecture of Attica, extending from the port of Piraeus to the cape of Souni. It is the natural extension of the basin towards the sea and the zone of natural recreation for the residents of Attica.

The scope of the project, which includes the construction of a single network of cycle paths and pedestrian paths, concerns the consolidation of the urban coastline of the Prefecture of Attica, which extends from the uneven Poseidonos – Kifissou junction of the Municipality of Moschato to the Town Hall of the Municipality of Vari, Voula, Vouliagmeni. The estimated length of the project that will be undertaken by the Project Maturation Unit in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Region of Attica, the Municipalities of the region and ETAD, amounts to 13.5 kilometers and is financed by resources of the Recovery and Resilience Fund .

The total length of the “Urban Walk” is 22 kilometers. Part of the project, approximately 9 kilometers long, will be built by the Region of Attica, the municipalities of the region and by private individuals. Particularly:

a) The section from the port of Piraeus to the Stadium of Peace and Friendship (SEF), approximately 4 km long, will be implemented as a separate construction project for a bicycle path – pedestrian path, by the Municipality of Piraeus.

b) The section from the Peace and Friendship Stadium (SEF) to the Olympic Properties, approximately 1.5 kilometers long, will be implemented as part of the Falirikos Ormos regeneration project, with the Attica Region as contracting authority.

c) The section that passes through Marina Alimos – specifically 1 kilometer of cycle path – pedestrian is part of the obligations of the concessionaire of the Concession Agreement from 2020 between and TAIPED, the Greek State, ETAD and the concessionaire “MARINA ALIMO – DEVELOPMENT OF NEW MARINA ALIMO SOLE SA”, in accordance with the approval of the general planning of Alimos Marina (from 13.08.2018 p.d. – AAP 172).

d) Part of the project, 800 m long, passes within the properties of the Hellinikon investment. In the current phase, the method and the implementation body of the section in question are being investigated.

e) A section that passes through the Municipality of Glyfada, approximately 2 km long, is implemented as part of the separate project entitled “Redevelopment of the Glyfada Beachfront”, with the contracting authority being the Municipality of Glyfada.

The “Urban Promenade” crosses six municipalities (Kallithea, P. Faliro, Alimos, Ellinikou-Argyroupoli, Glyfada, Vari – Voula – Vouliagmeni) and is expected to create a quality, functional and aesthetic axis that connects and unifies the coastal area in question.

The aim of the project is the creation of an upgraded free public space, which is attributed to the pedestrians and cyclists of the entire basin. The intervention aims to improve the urban environment by upgrading the quality of urban space and attracting new functions of economic activities, having at the same time a positive impact on the natural environment of urban centers, creating new jobs and achieving significant energy savings that will contribute to the transition to a low carbon economy.
