Mitsotakis: At the anniversary NATO Summit on July 10 and 11, what will be discussed – 2024-07-09 23:56:37

He will be in Washington on Wednesday and Thursday Kyriakos Mitsotakis for the NATO meeting, in which the appointment of the former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, as the new Secretary General, will be ratified.

NATO Anniversary Summit

This year’s Synod has special symbolism, because of 75th anniversary of the founding of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and its imminent ratification appointment, as the new Secretary General of NATO, of the former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, who will succeed Jens Stoltenberg and take office on 1 October 2024.

It will also be the first time that the Summit will be held with 32 Allies, following the completion of the enlargement of the Alliance and the accession of Finland and Sweden.

On July 10 and 11, the North Atlantic Council will meet at the level of Allied Heads of State and Government.

The agenda of the Synod

The agenda of the Synod includes the strengthening of collective deterrence and defense and the war in Ukraine. In this context, the NATO-Ukraine Council will be convened with the aim of strengthening NATO assistance to Ukraine, as well as examining its Euro-Atlantic perspective.

The subject of the Synod’s agenda is also the deepening NATO partnershipslike the cooperation with “IP4” partners (Australia, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea) of the Indo-Pacific region, as well as with the states of the Southern Neighborhood to address common security challenges such as terrorism, illegal immigration and the protection of freedom of navigation.

During the Summit, a public diplomacy event “NATO Public Forum” will take place, with the aim of exchanging views on the policies, decisions and goals of the North Atlantic Alliance.
