In NATO Summit the prime minister is expected to participate Kyriakos Mitsotakis on July 10 and 11, accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, George Gerapetritis.

NATO Anniversary Summit

This year’s Synod has special symbolism, because of 75th anniversary of the founding of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and its imminent ratification appointment, as the new Secretary General of NATO, of the former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, who will succeed Jens Stoltenberg and take office on 1 October 2024.

It will also be the first time that the Summit will be held with 32 Allies, following the completion of the enlargement of the Alliance and the accession of Finland and Sweden.

On July 10 and 11, the North Atlantic Council will meet at the level of Allied Heads of State and Government.

The agenda of the Synod

The agenda of the Synod includes the strengthening of collective deterrence and defense and the war in Ukraine. In this context, the NATO-Ukraine Council will be convened with the aim of strengthening NATO assistance to Ukraine, as well as examining its Euro-Atlantic perspective.

The agenda of the Summit also includes the deepening of NATO partnerships, such as cooperation with the “IP4” partners (Australia, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea) of the Indo-Pacific region, as well as with the states of the Southern Neighborhood to address common security challenges such as terrorism, illegal immigration and the protection of freedom of navigation.

During the Summit, a public diplomacy event “NATO Public Forum” will take place, with the aim of exchanging views on the policies, decisions and goals of the North Atlantic Alliance.

The contacts of Giorgos Gerapetritis

The Minister of Foreign Affairs will accompany the Prime Minister in the work of the Summit, in his contacts with foreign officials and with members of Congress and will, at the same time, carry out separate bilateral contacts with his counterparts who will participate in the Summit.

On Tuesday, July 9, Mr. Gerapetritis will participate in a security event by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, focusing on the “Women, Peace and Security” agenda, and will attend the Alliance’s 75th Anniversary Celebration event.

On Wednesday, July 10, Mr. Gerapetritis will attend a dinner hosted by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to his counterparts at the Library of Congress.
